What AI Overviews actually pull from
Google's AI Overviews synthesise an answer from a set of ranked, indexed pages rather than sending the searcher to a single link. Being ranked isn't enough to be included - the content also needs to be structured clearly enough for the summarisation step to extract a citable claim from it.
Why SA businesses are underrepresented
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Thinner local content corpus | Fewer authoritative SA sources for the model to draw from |
| Marketing-first copywriting | Fewer directly quotable factual statements |
| Missing or generic structured data | Harder for extraction systems to identify entity and claim boundaries |
| Low content freshness | Deprioritised relative to recently updated pages |
What this means for a search strategy built only on rankings
Ranking #1 no longer guarantees the click it used to. If your top-ranking page isn't structured to be summarised, a competitor's lower-ranked but better-structured page can end up quoted directly in the Overview - capturing the visibility even without the higher rank.
Frequently asked questions
Should we try to block AI Overviews from using our content?
Generally no - being cited in an Overview is a visibility channel, not a threat, provided your brand name and link are included. The bigger risk is being invisible in it entirely.
